Center of Mass

Theory & Logic

Theoretical Background

Physics describes the fundamental mechanism of the universe. The Center of Mass (2-Body) is an essential tool for understanding Center of Mass (2-Body) in quantitative terms. Calculate Xcm = (m1x1 + m2x2) / (m1+m2).

Mathematical Formulation

The relationship between the variables is governed by the following equation:

Result = ((m1 × x1) + (m2 × x2)) ÷ (m1 + m2)
Eq 1.1: Governing Formula

Variable Legend

Symbol Parameter Unit
m1 Mass 1 kg
x1 Pos 1 m
m2 Mass 2 kg
x2 Pos 2 m

Practical Calculation Example

Problem

Calculating the result when:

  • Mass 1 = 5 kg
  • Pos 1 = 30 m
  • Mass 2 = 60 kg
  • Pos 2 = 100 m

Solution

Substituting into Eq 1.1:

Result = ((5 × 30) + (60 × 100)) ÷ (5 + 60)
