What is Aspect Ratio?

Aspect Ratio is the proportional relationship between the width and height of an image or screen. It is usually expressed as two numbers separated by a colon, like 16:9.

Important: Aspect ratio does not tell you the actual size (inches or pixels) of the image, only the shape. A 100x100 image and a 1000x1000 image both have a 1:1 aspect ratio.

Common Aspect Ratios Explained

16:9 (Widescreen)

The standard for HDTV, YouTube, and most modern monitors. Example resolutions: 1920x1080, 1280x720.

4:3 (Standard)

Old standard-definition TVs and computer monitors. Still used in some photography formats.

1:1 (Square)

Perfect square. Popularized by Instagram and social media profile pictures.

21:9 (Ultrawide)

Cinematic standard. Used in ultrawide gaming monitors.

How to Calculate Aspect Ratio?

To find the aspect ratio of a given Width (W) and Height (H), you must divide both by their Greatest Common Divisor (GCD).

Example: 1920 x 1080
The GCD of 1920 and 1080 is 120.
1920 / 120 = 16
1080 / 120 = 9
Result: 16:9

Frequently Asked Questions

Does resizing change quality?

Scaling down (making smaller) usually retains quality. Scaling up (making larger) introduces pixelation because the computer has to invent pixels that weren't there.

What happens if I use the wrong ratio?

If you force a 4:3 video into a 16:9 player without cropping, it will look stretched or squashed. Alternatively, you will get "black bars" on the sides (pillarboxing).
