How to Calculate Mulch

The formula for mulch is straightforward. You are essentially calculating the volume of a rectangular prism.

Step 1: Calculate Area

Area = Length × Width (in feet)

Step 2: Convert Depth

Convert your desired depth from inches to feet by dividing by 12.

Step 3: Calculate Volume

Volume (cubic feet) = Area × Depth (feet)

Step 4: Convert to Yards

Cubic Yards = Cubic Feet / 27

Tips for Measuring

Break it down: For irregular shapes, break the area into smaller rectangles or squares, measure them individually, and add the areas together.
Round up: It's always better to have a little extra mulch than to run out halfway through the job. Round up your final cubic yardage by 5-10%.
Depth matters: For new beds, 3 inches is standard. For top-dressing existing mulch, 1-2 inches is usually sufficient.
