What Is Waist to Hip Ratio?

Waist to Hip Ratio is a simple calculation that compares the size of your waist to the size of your hips. It is often used as an indicator of how fat is distributed around your body. Research suggests that people who carry more fat around the waist ("apple" shape) may have higher risk of certain health conditions than those who carry more around the hips ("pear" shape), even at similar body weights.

How to Interpret Your Waist to Hip Ratio

Our calculator uses commonly referenced World Health Organization-style cutoffs for adults:

  • For men: below 0.90 is often considered low risk, 0.900to00.99 moderate, and 1.00 or higher high risk.
  • For women: below 0.80 is often considered low risk, 0.800to00.84 moderate, and 0.85 or higher high risk.

These thresholds are general guidelines only. Different countries, medical organizations, and researchers may use slightly different boundaries, and WHR is just one small piece of the overall health picture.

Limitations and Important Notes

  • WHR does not directly measure body fat percentage or muscle mass.
  • It may be less appropriate for children, pregnant people, and some older adults.
  • Clothing, posture, and measurement technique can change the numbers slightly.
  • This tool is educational only and not designed for diagnosis or treatment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the unit (cm vs in) matter?

No. Because WHR is a ratio (waist divided by hip), the units cancel out as long as you measure both in the same unit. You can use centimeters or inches according to your preference.

Can I use this instead of a doctor visit?

No. This calculator cannot diagnose or rule out any condition. It simply visualizes one widely discussed measurement. Always consult a qualified healthcare professional for medical questions.
